Treasurer's Report for financial year
January-December 2004

The Association continues to benefit from the success of the Journal, Literary and Linguistic Computing. Our assets at December 2004 were £69,515 (last year £89,041).

The Journal income for 2004 was £20,156. Under the agreement with OUP, the Association receives 15% of the subscription income (£8,959) and 50% of the profit (£11,197) made by the Journal.

Subscription to the Journal is the means by which individuals become members of the Association. Payments to the Association from OUP in respect of the Journal are staged, and the final settlement is not made until five months or so after the end of the year to which it relates. The financial report presented at conference contains the Association accounts for the preceding calendar year, but in turn these accounts reflect the Journal income of the year before that. Hence the 2005 conference is presented with the 2004 accounts, whose income is largely that for the 2003 Journal.

Our expenditure was much higher than last year and the accounts show net income/expenditure of -£16,928. New  items of expenditure this year were related to the new OUP contract for the Journal (£5,624 for consultancy on the preparation of the tender and legal advice) and to the creation of the ADHO umbrella organisation in which we are joining with the Association for Computer in the Humanities (ACH). A goodwill payment of £6,482 was made to ACH pending the calculation of their due amount from the Journal income. This calculation will be made when we have correct figures from OUP showing ACH  subscriptions to the Journal.

Five ALLC Bursary awards of £500 were made at the conference at Göteborg University, Sweden.

I am happy to provide more information on any item in the accounts to interested members. Contact me at the address below.
