Introduction
The workshop at the University of Macedonia was the first in what is planned to be a regular series of events organized by
the Association of Literary and Linguistic Computing, and was co-organized by the ACO*HUM (Advanced Computing in the Humanities)
project. The University of Macedonia was chosen because Marilyn Deegan and Harold Short had been invited by the Librarian,
Anna Fragkou, to present a two-day workshop on digital libraries, and was delighted also to host the humanities computing
workshop. The digital libraries workshop, ëThe Era Of Digitization: Transforming Scholarly Texts into Digits' was held on
23-24 May. A programme is attached as Appendix 1.
Workshop Programme
The humanities computing workshop, held on 25-26 May, was entitled: ëThinking with machines: Computing tools and resources
in Humanities research and teaching'. The programme is attached document as Appendix 2. The presentations were mounted on
the library web site at the University of Macedonia, where they can still be consulted. (URL) The participants were students,
academics, and librarians from the University of Macedonia and the Aristotle University, both in Thessaloniki. There were
also participants from other local organizations, including the British Council. No prior knowledge of the field was assumed,
and levels of expertise were mixed, as were the discipline areas of the participants. However, the evaluation forms showed
that all gained a great deal out of the workshop, and all felt that they would like to take more courses in humanities computing.
A blank evaluation form is attached as Appendix 3.
Technical Support
Two technicians were provided by the University of Macedonia Library, and they worked tirelessly to ensure that all programs
ran and that all documents were available to the students on the web site both during and after the workshop. The excellence
of the technical support was a key factor in ensuring the success of the event.
Comments
The workshop presenters found the event both fulfilling and worthwhile. It is difficult to design a workshop with no idea
of the possible attendees, their disciplines, and their technical skills, but the eagerness of the participants to learn and
engage more than made up for these possible difficulties. It was, however, a very demanding experience for all the presenters,
and we make some recommendations based on our experiences for future workshop presenters.
Evaluation Form
The Evaluation Form used at the event is available as Appendix 3 to this document, in a portable document format (Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 required).
